Phil, characterizing the blogger/MSM relationship parasitic conjures a favorite Bogart quote from Casablanca: "I don't mind a parasite, I object to a cut-rate one."

Like parasites, not all bloggers are equal, and MSM (as well as STM) is well served by the attitude that a derivative work that amplifies (or even corrects) an original work is ultimately good for users and can be good for business if it is embraced.

I may not be objective, but this blog, BTW, is an excellent one with a (growing) roster of all-star leaders in you, Kent, and Howard.

While I don't see how the AP could enforce and collect their citing toll, I can see their argument. Most bloggers, like yours truly, largely comment on the news created by bonna fide news organizations. The relationship is largely parasitic -- I depend on their work to add value, while they derive no value from me.

The act of linking to the original piece, however, can draw the reader to view some piece of paid advertisement. Perhaps there is some sort of indirect pay-back in blogging.
