Dr. Bruno is an internationally-recognized expert in Radiology Quality & Safety, having delivered numerous invited lectures, grand-rounds presentations, webinars, and teaching workshops at major venues both nationally and internationally.  He has published more than 100 articles in the peer-reviewed literature as well as having authored or co-authored three major textbooks in Radiology, including Quality & Safety in Radiology, which was published in 2012, and, most recently, the monograph Error and Uncertainty in Diagnostic Radiology, which was published in 2019 by Oxford University Press.  He has been a member of 3 academic journal editorial boards, including two academic radiology journals and the journal Patient Safety, which is published by the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority.

His active research program focuses on understanding the underlying neurocognitive causes of radiologists’ errors and finding ways to reduce errors in practice and to prevent patient harm resulting from error.  An additional area of scholarly focus is the application of human-factors engineering approaches to optimize AI tools with the goal of improving patient safety, including the application of human-centered AI for physician error reduction and harm prevention.  In recent years, he has also focused on policy approaches for reducing wasteful overutilization of medical imaging and the attendant risk of patient harm.
