Glory Akwa

My name is Glory Akwa, and I am a Ph.D. student in Information Science at Indiana University Bloomington. My research focuses on Social Informatics, where I examine the social aspects of technologies such as artificial intelligence and social media. Specifically, I study how these technologies are designed, implemented, and used in different contexts, with research spanning AI and medicine, cyberbullying, scholarly publishing, and the effective use of GenAI in higher education. My goal is to produce difference-making research and discoveries. I have been able to make significant progress in my academic journey. I recently published a first-author paper in AI and Ethics, a Q1 journal published by Springer Nature, and have presented my work at leading conferences such as the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), Computing Research Association (CRA) Grad Cohort Workshop, and the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP). The Luddy School has supported and enabled me to actively engage with the broader professional and research community to further develop my work.  Beyond research, I serve as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University, where I support undergraduate and graduate teaching. These experiences, alongside my research training, are shaping me into a well-rounded scholar committed to impactful and socially relevant research.

I was drawn to the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) because of its global reputation, strong networking culture, and supportive professional environment. Working with my mentor and collaborating with amazing professionals has been quite enriching. Their mentorship has played a key role in nurturing my professional growth. My long-term goal is to become a leading researcher whose work contributes to meaningful discoveries and helps build safer, more inclusive digital technologies. I am deeply grateful for the SSP fellowship support that has made these opportunities possible.
