Editor’s note: With only three weeks to go until SSP’s 48th Annual Meeting, planning committee members (Marianne Calilhanna, David Turner, Jennifer Regala, and Michelle Urberg) reflect on their expectations and share messages for attendees.

SSP’s 48th Annual Meeting takes place soon in Chula Vista, CA, at the end of May. We hope to see you there!

On June 17, the Annual Meeting Highlights virtual event brings the best of three days of sessions to everyone who couldn’t make it in person. Consider it the encore, but no travel is required!

The Highlights webinar features summaries (presented by the speakers/panelists from the Annual Meeting) of both the plenary and concurrent sessions. These sessions will be organized by topic, and time for Q&A and discussion will be built in.

If there’s one voice you don’t want to miss, it’s keynote speaker Dr. Chinasa T. Okolo, who joins the Highlights livestream to unpack AI governance and safety, datafication, and why the future of AI looks very different depending on where you are in the world.

We asked a few people from the Annual Meeting Planning Committee to share a few compelling reasons why you should attend the Highlights event.

Michelle Urberg: A Message for Librarians

We need your perspective — the voice of content purchasers and users!

The entire scholarly communications ecosystem is grappling with AI changing how users engage with content. Publishers and librarians both need to reassess their conceptual models of content engagement. SSP’s 2026 program is fine-tuned to offer the publisher perspective on how AI is changing content usage, but this perspective is incomplete without the librarians who buy the content in the room! We need your voice in this discussion, and we hope you consider joining us for the SSP Highlights meeting, which will offer lots of discussion opportunities to weigh in on issues surrounding AI in the publishing and library spaces.

Jennifer Regala: To Those Who Can’t Travel to California

If you’ll miss the annual meeting in Chula Vista, you won’t want to miss this encore opportunity to get the juiciest recaps from the SSP annual meeting. As a participant in the highlights webinar last year, we had a robust discussion and a chance to revisit the most important topics from the meeting.

And for annual meeting attendees, it’s definitely worth attending the Highlights webinar. New questions, new twists and turns, and lots of new information and insights unlocked. This webinar is a must-attend for everyone!

David Turner: Not Your Average Webinar

The Highlights event has become one of the “highlights” (pun most definitely intended!) on my summer calendar — and I’m thrilled to reprise my role as virtual host/MC. We know that many SSP members around the world aren’t able to attend the meeting in person, so we’ve designed this event so you can still experience the best parts.

And for those who are able to attend in person, you know it’s impossible to see every session and digest all the details. The Highlights Virtual event has been designed for you, too, offering you the chance to plug back in, hear from the community, and take your annual meeting experience to the next level.

This is not simply another static webinar. We’ll have live discussions, Q&A, and opportunities to personally compare notes with colleagues across the scholarly communication community. And because registration includes OnDemand access to the keynote, plenary, and educational session recordings, you can catch what you missed (or rewatch what you want to revisit) on your own schedule.
