Another year and another crop of amazing examples of the progress in video microscopy have been announced as the winners in the 2023 Nikon Small World in Motion competition. As an old imaging jock from my research days, I get a jolt of nostalgia every time these winners are announced, which is rapidly followed by amazement at how far and fast the field of bioimaging has come in the (gasp) almost 25 years since I left it. If you have any doubts about scientific progress, walk away from your field for a few decades and gain some perspective.
